America's Great Outdoors Progress Report Released

2012-12-05 / Tom Flynn

Yesterday, the Obama Administration released a progress report to the ongoing America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) initiative. The report details on-the-ground results from the initiative so far.

Along with efforts to make it easier for veterans to visit public lands and expand outdoor education, AGO has been instrumental in increasing Youth Conservation Corps participation, improving access to waterways and shorelines, and revamping the Recreation.gov website.

The report also highlights the designation of four new National Monuments, including Fort Ord, with its vital provisions for mountain biking. Throughout, the report recognizes the importance of recreation, for social as well as economic benefits.

Outdoor Alliance has been engaged in the AGO initiative from the very beginning, organizing official and “homegrown” listening sessions across the county. Additionally, OA was honored to attend the White House Conference on Conservation last March. In the current phase of the initiative, we sit on the AGO Task Force, helping to guide its implementation.

We support AGO’s approach, which emphasizes local perspectives, good science, and collaboration – both with and between the government agencies. We are excited to help the Administration and all the agencies make the most of the AGO initiative in the next four years, and beyond.
